If we had a legitimately free press, one could make the case that a license should not be needed at all; but that is not what our so-called “free press” has turned out to be. When the press uses what are commonly called airwaves for free, airwaves that, as President Trump put it, are worth billions of dollars, they have a responsibility to broadcast news that impacts the general welfare of the people, news like the massive declassification of election tampering evidence showing that foreign sovereigns interfered with the choice made by Americans about who would lead our nation, states and even counties.
Moreover, last Thursday, when the President announced the public release of declassified materials on vulnerabilities in the United States election infrastructure, most American media outlets and script readers (previously called journalists) did not engage in due diligence to actually read the files. Most Americans will never open those files. They will read what four AI systems, and the news outlets those systems draw from, say the files contain. Tested directly against the release, all four major models (Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, xAI) failed to access and fully parse the complete primary record.
Each fell back on secondary summaries, which carried editorial framing, selection, and omission. Judge censorship by intent, and no one is guilty. Judge it by effect, and the finding is plain: the release was censored. Not by an order. By an architecture. Four companies now sit between the citizen and the public record, and the layer they operate does not carry the record through intact.
The question is not whether four companies chose to filter the President’s release. The question is why the public reading of the public record now passes through four companies at all.
So What?
The filtering effect is real, measurable, and operates without anyone intending it:
- Models default to indexed secondary content. The framing arrives before the facts.
- Bulk archives on official sites (ZIP files of PDFs) sit outside what the tools reliably parse. The primary record is technically public and functionally unreadable.
- Pressed to read the originals, models generate plausible detail with no verifiable tie to the documents. Confident fabrication replaces stated limits.
The effect is identical to editorial gatekeeping: selection, emphasis, and omission at a national scale, with no editor to name and no decision to appeal. Whether any given filter is a limitation or a choice is currently unanswerable, because the record is published in formats the machines cannot read. That unanswerability is the vulnerability.
The Executive has already recognized what these systems are, from the other direction. Executive Order 14409 (June 2, 2026) built a classified benchmark for frontier AI models and gave the Director of NSA the authority to designate a covered frontier model, with developers voluntarily granting the government pre-release access for up to 30 days. The state now reads the models before the publicdoes. Nomechanism ensures the models can read the state’s record before the public asks them to. Same companies. Both directions. Only one was covered.
Who Is Benefitting?
- The secondary layer. News organizations whose framing becomes the substrate every model retrieves. Their emphasis becomes the public’s memory of the release.
- The four AI firms. Their products became the default reader of government output without the accountability of a publisher or the transparency of a library.
- Any actor who prefers the release discussed rather than read. An unread primary record is a contested primary record.
Who is controlling our media?
Ten days after Trump’s inauguration, a former Pentagon official publicly floated a military coup in Foreign Policy magazine. Within a year, she was advising a new Soros-funded organization that quietly assembled 70 former Obama national security officials under one roof. 46 of them went on to staff the Biden administration — including the Secretary of State, CIA Director, DNI, NSA, and UN Ambassador. 88.6% were Obama alumni. The primary funder: the Open Society Action Fund. The same woman simultaneously sat on the funder’s board and the organization’s advisory council. She also co-founded the Transition Integrity Project and spent 14 years at New America developing doctrine on military refusal of orders.
